I was familiar with the terms 'organic', 'non-GMO', 'vegan', etc., but it never really meant much to me. That was until I had my first child. That's when everything changed. I'd always known how to read food labels and tried not to buy foods with ingredients that I couldn't pronounce. I didn't always choose 'clean' foods, but I made an effort. After I had my son, EVERYTHING changed. I knew I wanted to provide him the best nutritious foods that I possibly could (when he got old enough to eat food). If I was going to do it for my son, I might as well eat the same way too. My husband was on board and we emptied out our pantry. We had some healthy things in there - like walnuts and rice cakes (lol). It felt good to throw away all of that processed, long shelf-life food. We stuffed our fridge with all healthy, organic, non-GMO, fresh, unprocessed foods. And that was just the beginning.
The next switch was cleaning products. I started making my own cleaning sprays. It was fun to mix different essential oils together and in the process, I was learning a ton. Then we gutted our medicine cabinet. We filled it with chelated vitamins and minerals and homeopathic remedies. I learned about elderberry syrup and how amazing it was (and now I make it along with elderberry gummies).
Then I began the hunt for non-toxic beauty products - shampoo, conditioner, body wash, shaving cream, face wash, make-up, deodorant, lotion, nail polish - the list goes on. It felt good to make such a big change. I remember buying my first natural deodorant. I had googled for hours, reading product reviews after product reviews, and finally made a decision on what brand I would buy. My excitement quickly faded when the deodorant just didn't work. I know it can take a week or two for your body odor to regulate after making the switch from chemical-filled deodorant/antiperspirant to natural deodorant but this stuff just was NOT working. So the hunt began.
I bought deodorant after deodorant after deodorant. After trying 12 different brands, I wanted to give up. At this point I was now pregnant with my second child. My sister treated me to a maternity massage for my baby shower gift. As we were leaving the massage, we stopped in the little shop on the way out. I saw some natural deodorant and figured "why not?!" and I bought one. IT WORKED! I couldn't believe it. Why had it taken so long to find a deodorant that worked? Then the wheels started turning. I couldn't be the only one that this has happened to. There has to be other people out there that are searching for the perfect deodorant but just can't find it. I decided I was going to make my own deodorant and offer it to the public. And that is how SilKinCreations started!
